£2.8 million to improve Scotland’s community spaces

February 28, 2012

Twenty four Scottish groups with big plans for shaping their local neighbourhoods are celebrating the first grants from our Community Spaces programme.  From the refurbishment of local halls and community centres to the transformation of community greenspaces, gardens and allotments, the awards worth £2.8 million will improve and develop a range of community spaces.

Amongst the successful groups is the McMaster Sports Centre in Johnstone which will be upgraded, thanks to an award of £157,361. The centre, which was closed three years ago and has succumbed to graffiti, will now reopen for local people to enjoy a range of physical activities such as football, athletics, tae kwondo and dance, as well as providing a venue for community meetings and local events.

Cancer Link Aberdeen & North offers a wide range of support services for patients, carers and families of anyone affected by cancer on Orkney.  Thanks to an award of £103,549, the group will be able to create a therapy garden adjacent to their centre in Kirkwall.  Once completed the garden will be open to all and will also be used by local groups on the island.

The Waverly Tenants Organisation receives a Community Spaces grant of £84,803 to develop a playpark in Langlee on the outskirts of Galasheils. The park, which will include new play equipment, will improve physical activity levels amongst children and will provide a focal point for families to meet.
