BBC weather girl Cat Cubie joined rock band Semper Fi as the group won the Glasgow round of the Peace Mix Relay: a nationwide initiative to promote peace and unity amongst young people through music supported by the Big Lottery Fund (BIG).
Glasgow’s leading young singer-songwriters, bands and MCs recorded and performed in front of a panel of music industry judges and live audience at the Peace Mix Mic Relay at Beatroute Arts on Friday 13 July. Rock sensation Semper Fi came out on top against local talent including Leanne Douglas, OCD, and The Little Illusions.
Paul Burns, lead singer of Semper Fi said: “We’re really happy to have won. We didn’t feel like we were competing really though because we did so much more than perform on the day like meeting all the other really talented artists and getting loads of advice from all the music industry experts. We’re just passionate about music and I think that came through to the judges – and we’re excited to play the Eden Project soon!”
Judge and weather girl Cat said: “We felt that Semper Fi encapsulated everything we’re trying to achieve with Peace Mix. They are an exceptional raw talent with bags of potential that a publically funded music studio can support and develop. We were blown away by the professionalism of their song writing.”
Peace Mix is a campaign by the Big Lottery Fund and aspiring social enterprise New Day Foundation which aims to give young people across the UK a voice and the opportunity to help promote peace through music.
As part of the campaign, the Mic Relay tour is visiting music studios across the UK like Beatroute Arts to promote up-and-coming talent from each area, and showcase local music facilities – funded by BIG and others – that are positive, creative spaces for young people to get involved in at little or no cost.
Semper Fi will now compete against the winning acts from ten other UK cities in the semi-final event at the Eden Project in Cornwall on 16 August. One overall winner from the Eden event will be chosen to perform at the Peace Mix finale alongside special surprise guests at London’s prestigious Roundhouse on 28 August.
In addition to the Mic Relay events, the campaign is celebrating young music talent nationwide through a groundbreaking, crowd-sourced collaboration track to which young people are being invited to contribute their lyrics, beats and music to via the Peace Mix website www.peacemix.co.uk.
