Maureen McGinn, Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair
In March 2007 I was delighted to be appointed as a member of the first Big Lottery Fund Scotland Committee, responsible for making devolved decisions on Lottery spending. As a member of this new committee, I was enthused by meeting colleagues from a range of backgrounds and professions and becoming part of a new group of people with a common aim – to use Lottery funding to bring real improvements to communities and the lives of people most in need across Scotland.
Here at the Big Lottery Fund we distribute around £1 million every week in Scotland. To help us do this we are currently recruiting at least two new members for our Scotland Committee. The successful appointees will join the talented and diverse committee, sharing strategic responsibility for the direction and work of the Big Lottery Fund in Scotland.
They will help to decide on the funding programmes to be run in Scotland while also making all major funding decisions. When applications for support exceed the available funding, then we frequently have to take some very difficult decisions – to ensure that the money available makes the biggest impact possible across Scotland. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously because we are spending money which comes from the Lottery playing public.
So who are we looking for? Well, we want our Committee to have a broad base of knowledge, skills and experience and to reflect modern Scotland in all its diversity. We also want to include individuals who have experience of the challenges we are seeking to address, as well an understanding of the assets and potential within Scotland’s communities which we can support.
