The latest edition of our BIG magazine is now out and it’s full of inspiring stories of how our funding is having a huge impact on people, families and communities across the country.

We’ve travelled the length and breadth of Scotland and met some fantastic people including a very special choir in Kirkcaldy.

The Fife Carers Choir was only formed in April this year but its impact has been huge for all its members and we spoke to one of them.

Moira Simpson, 70 from Kirkcaldy, has been caring for her husband, Andrew, for almost 50 years. Andrew is currently on dialysis and goes to the hospital three times a week.

Moira said, “For me it’s not really the day to day caring role but it’s the constant worry as my mind is almost constantly on Andrew whether I am with him or not.”

Moira joined the choir almost six months ago and it’s the one place where she can forget her worries. She says, “I was in a choir at school but have never had the chance or, more importantly, time to spare since then.

“It really lifts me and, during our two hour practice sessions, it’s the only time I completely forget what’s going on in my life. It gives me such a feeling when I sing and I would say that it’s the best thing I have ever done for myself.”

Lesley Childs, whose idea it was to create the Carefree Choir explains, “Music brings so much joy to people and we can see the truth of that at every rehearsal and performance we give. Starting out we spoke to local choral societies and that’s how we found our wonderful musical director, Bob Barclay.

“Bob has been a carer himself and he’s even written a song especially for us called ‘Just Another Day.’ It’s a really personal song for the choir to perform as everyone singing it can relate to the words so much.”
