Creating opportunities for young Scots

Training and employment opportunities for young people have been given a financial boost thanks to grants announced today (1July) from the Young Start Fund.

Among the ten projects sharing in £368,887 is a programme providing mentoring and training in football journalism.

A £30,670 grant for Youth Football Scotland will enable young people to be matched with community youth football clubs and become a media officer.

Robert Forsyth, Director, Youth Football Scotland, said: “Receiving this award will enable us to take our services Scotland-wide and target youth clubs that can benefit most and maximise the impact we make amongst their young players. It will also let us give the volunteers the training and development required to give them the best possible chance of employment with a career they can thrive on.”

Scottish Throughcare and Aftercare Forum (STAF) receives £49,919 to work with young people who have direct experience of care to help them establish a number of regional forums to support other young care leavers.

Chris Meechan, STAF Training Facilitator, said: “We will be able to work alongside young people with care experience on building confidence and empowering them to help instigate the changes that need to happen for the Children and Young Peoples (Scotland) Act 2014 to be effective. It’s a great opportunity for STAF and young people to ensure that looked after young people stay until they are fully ready to move onto independence.”

Run by the Big Lottery Fund Scotland for the Scottish Government, Young Start awards money from dormant bank and building society accounts that have seen no customer-initiated activity for at least 15 years.
