Passionate about supporting communities? We are currently recruiting funding officers to join our Scotland directorate. To give people an idea of what it’s like working at the Fund, we spoke to Corné Storm, funding officer for Fife, to give you the inside scoop…
Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do at the National Lottery Community Fund.
I’m a born and bred South-African, now living in Fife, but have also lived in South Wales for over a decade. I have 2 young girls, and as a family we love being in, and exploring the outdoors. I have worked with charities all my life prior to joining the Fund, so have always been passionate to support people. I’m a funding officer in the Central Scotland team and cover the area of Fife.
What made you decide to join the Fund?
While I did my Masters in Social Enterprise, with the idea of starting one to tackle loneliness and isolation, a lot of my research for my dissertation was from The Fund’s impact stories and blogs. So, when a part-time contract came up, I thought it would be useful to get some insight and a better understanding of funding and what the Fund do.
Has anything surprised you since joining the fund?
The role is so diverse, which suits my personality quite well. I can get bored quite quickly, so being able to work with such a variety of organisations, groups and people, definitely keeps things interesting. I just love how every day can be so different.
What’s been your highlight?
Getting out and about in Fife, visiting groups and projects is a lot of fun. One time it meant visiting a project that supports young people, utilising Animal Husbandry, at lambing season! Holding lambs, and seeing young people having fun, what’s not to like.
What does a day in the life of a Funding Officer look like?
Speaking with a variety of people, from enquiry phase of funding through to supporting existing grant holders. Reaching out to new and different groups in our place area and offering advice on the different programmes of funding. Soon you’ll build long-term relationships with people in the local area you cover. Sometimes you even get to join in a group’s fun day and get to try out a Segway!
What would you say to someone who is considering applying for a Funding Officer role but isn’t 100% sure?
The Fund is a great place to work, colleagues are supportive, kind and passionate about helping communities to thrive. If you share this passion, do not hesitate, give it a shot.
Do you have any words of wisdom for those who are applying?
Just be yourself! I found the role so diverse at the start, and I am still learning a lot, but found that there are no stupid questions, and everyone is always happy to help.
